Organic food condemned for ‘guarantees’ in French record

A French purchaser organization has condemned the natural meals industry for imparting “mountains of promises” that they often cannot keep, in a file for which it tested 130 organic products. The purchaser group 60 Million de Consommateurs tested a diffusion of meals together with milk, cereals, spreads, fruit, wine, meat, and fish, as a part of its July-August magazine special committed to “the best of organic.”

It aimed to analyze what it called “the mountains of promises” of a quarter that is “some distance from flawless.” Also, it condemned the truth that organic products, with the AB label, can frequently fee a lot more than their “conventional” counterparts.

Products have been criticized now not most effective for their better charge, but also for persisting in some cases – to use factors derived from the exploitation of immigrant employees or the use of elements such as palm oil, which has been connected to global deforestation.

Deputy editor Christelle Pangrazzi stated: “At a time of a couple of food scandals, the [AB Agriculture Biologique organic] emblem is seen because of the holy grail. But it’s far, far from ideal. “When deciding on organic, customers should have an assurance of buying responsibly, from a nutritional wellness point of view as a great deal as an ecological or ethical one.”

Ms. Pangrazzi added: “It is now not the time for mountains of promises, no matter how ‘natural’ a product can be.” The mag, which is edited with the aid of the consumer institute L’Institut National de l. A. Consommation, also highlighted different areas that might be stepped forward, which include the use of pesticides, in-depth farming practices, consuming fruit and vegetables out of season, and the wrapping of produce in plastic.

The mag comes in the same week as the Countrywide Natural Development Corporation, the Agence Bio (Agence Française pour le Développement et la Promotion de l’Agriculture Biologique), which released figures showing that 5% of ingredients bought in France at the moment are natural, representing a marketplace of almost 10 billion. The corporation also highlighted the marketplace effect of supermarkets, which now promote half of the natural products offered compared to previous years, whilst the arena became the home of professional health shops.

1. Read the labels through and via!:

While labels provide important information in terms of ingredients, food processing, etc., it is crucial to make it a practice to go through no longer just the bold headings imprinted on the label but also the fine print. It is needed by way of regulation for producers to label ingredients for what they are, natural or not.

When you encounter a product that announces ‘Organic’ or ‘Certified Organic,’ this could mean various things – the product is 100% natural, the processed food is made with natural ingredients, or the processed meals include less than 95% of natural components. The key is to peruse the labels and ensure that what you’re shopping for is 100% natural or is made using 100% natural elements.

2. Look for certification/authenticity marks:

Indian-made organic foods or natural products include an authentication mark or certification mark known as India Organic. This mark is a hallmark of the produce or the meal product conforming to the National Standards for Organic Products applied by India’s Government through the National Program for Organic Production (NPOP). This certification mark is recognized in several countries across the globe.

3. Keep a lookout for PLUs:

Typically, Price Look-Up codes or PLUs convey signs of whether the meal product is natural or not. In several nations, a natural food object is identified using the PLU code – if the code begins with the digit 9, it is natural, based on the code classification. While this isn’t always a common practice in India, it’s miles excellent to analyze price codes at your normal grocery shop to understand how they identify organic produce.
