The History

The Poteet Strawberry Festival 2022 is an annual event in April and celebrates the town’s most famous produce. It features a wide variety of strawberry-themed treats, music, and other events. The three-day festival also supports local farmers, small businesses, and nonprofit organizations. It is one of the largest in the state and attracts tens of thousands of visitors each year.

The city of Poteet is located in Atascosa County and is surrounded by fertile farmland. It is also home to the Artesian Belt Railroad, which helped its residents prosper in the early 1900s. Farmers in the area tapped into the water of nearby artesian wells to irrigate their crops, and strawberries quickly became the region’s signature crop and claim to fame. Henry and Ida Mumme began planting the rosy red fruit on their land in 1911, and by 1921, Poteet had already earned the nickname “Strawberry Capital of Texas.” The community celebrated its success with an annual strawberry festival.

A water tower built in the shape of a strawberry, along with the six-foot-tall and 1,600-pound World’s Largest Strawberry, became iconic symbols of the city’s rich agricultural heritage. The festival’s first official event occurred in 1948 and was organized by the Poteet Rotary Club. It was initially intended to provide a way to encourage returning World War II veterans to return to the farms and re-immerse themselves in agricultural life.

Today, the festival is popular for people from all over the country who indulge in many strawberry-themed goodies. It is also a chance for the community to come together and enjoy quality family time outdoors. The Poteet Strawberry Festival is a wonderful example of community spirit and Texas pride.

Jim Collums is a proud homeowner and loves that his hometown has embraced its reputation as “The Strawberry Capital of the World.” He operates a town winery and runs a side business in restoring old windmills. He is happy to share the history of his city with visitors, and he hopes that the festival will continue to grow and prosper for years to come.

Entertainment

Located about 20 miles south of San Antonio, the Poteet Strawberry Festival is a family-friendly event offering continuous entertainment in 10 areas, including concerts with nationally known country and Tejano artists, dancers, gunslingers, clowns, regional bands, and various contests and rodeo performances. The festival also features many local farmers and vendors and a full carnival for all ages.

The strawberry festival’s rodeo takes place on Saturday and Sunday. The Poteet Strawberry Festival Association and the Texas Professional Rodeo Association sponsor the rodeo. Tickets are available online, at the festival ticket office, and at the gate. Please note that ticket prices for rodeo events may change without notice.

This year’s festival will feature several different types of music, including country, Tejano, and Latin music. The festival also has a full carnival and a variety of food options. The Strawberry Festival Rodeo is a major festival highlight yearly and attracts thousands of people.

The festival is held in the city of Poteet, which is known as the “Strawberry Capital of Texas.” Its founders, Henry and Ida Mumme, began the tradition with a few rows in their kitchen garden. Today, the city is a thriving community with a rich history and many activities to enjoy.

In addition to strawberries, the festival offers many other types of foods and beverages. The festival is a popular attraction for tourists and residents alike, with an estimated attendance of 30,000 people daily. Guests can sample various foods, from traditional American fare to exotic dishes. The festival is also known for its multiple desserts, such as strawberry shortcake, chocolate strawberry tarts, and lemon cheesecake.

The Strawberry Festival Rodeo will be held from April 15 to 16 in Poteet, Texas. This event will feature various events and competitions, including the fastest calf roping in the world. The Rodeo will be broadcast on KENS 5 from 7 p.m. to midnight Friday night. The festival is a great weekend to spend with friends and family.

Food

Strawberry lovers from all over the state visit Poteet to taste this sweet Texas delicacy. Located about a half-hour south of San Antonio, the small Atascosa County town has become known as the Strawberry Capital of Texas. But this 76th annual festival offers so much more than mouth-watering strawberry treats. The event is also a major tourist attraction and provides scholarships for local youth.

The first event was held in 1948 and organized by the Poteet Rotary Club. It aimed to incentivize returning World War 11 veterans to return to their farms. The club also aimed to improve the strawberries pack so buyers would receive a uniform pint, flat, or crate of berries. Over the years, the festival has become a multi-million dollar economic generator for South Texas and Atascosa County.

In addition to various food vendors serving strawberry- or strawberry-flavored dishes, there are many arts and crafts booths at the festival. There is also a carnival and live musical performances. Several contests occur during the weekend, including a strawberry eating competition and berry judging and auction. The festival is open from 6 p.m. Friday to midnight on Saturday and Sunday, with admission being charged for those entering the grounds.

The festival has an extensive schedule of activities, so it’s important to plan your day carefully. The official festival contains a handy ground map to help visitors navigate the 100 acres of entertainment and exercise. The map will help visitors locate parking, entertainment stages, and other events to maximize their time at the festival.

Suppose you plan to attend the fest; you can make reservations at a nearby hotel or vacation rental in advance. Fortunately, numerous accommodations are available near the festival, so you’ll have no problem finding a place to stay during your trip. From quaint country cottages to idyllic bed and breakfasts, plenty of options suit your tastes and budget. For more information on lodging near the festival, check out the official Poteet Strawberry Festival website.
